"For everyone who asks receives,
and he who seeks finds,

(Matthew 7:8)

ORTHODOX COMMUNITIES

Orthodox Communities in The Philippines are of different spiritual growth level. Some of them are in a very early growth level while others are more matured. Nevertheless, all of them need more and more support, not only from the spiritual point of view but also from the social and humanitarian - philanthropic aspect.

From the spiritual point of view, we find many people disappointed of the other "christian churches". For those who are not familiar with the situation in Philippines, we have to point out that this country is full of many different - so called - "churches" while most of them are rather businesses than spiritual beacons. It is very common to find poor people complaining not only that the church is not supporting them but also not allowing them even to go to the church for the Sunday liturgy. As an obvious example, one widely spread religious organization, self-named as "christian church", using the masonic symbols in their sign, is demanding 10% of the income of all of its members. Under such circumstances, people are confused and cheaters find a fruitful field to deceive them more and more. It is also common to find self-named "priests" who are collecting money for their own pocket under various excuses.

Officially Philippines is referred as a Christian country with 80% Roman Catholics, 15% Muslims, 5% Other Christian denominations and Buddists. Although, the "other Christian denominations" are much more expanded and many "Christians" do not know where they belong. Many people are not baptized and many couples are not married because of the "high price" demanded by the "churches" for the above Holy Mysteries. Many people can easily change from "church" to "church", ignoring even what are the differences between the dominant churches (the Roman Catholic and the Protestant) and ignoring absolutely even the existence of the Orthodox Church. Unofficial information talks about 2000 different Christian denominations in the Philippines.

Besides the spiritual guidance, some of the problems we are trying to solve are: better nutrition for the children, water supply, social reconciliation with the neighbouring communities, basic health care and sencitization of the local authorities. Many of our communities are of poor and some of socially marginalized people. The lack of priests in the Orthodox Church (at present we have only 4 Orthodox priests in Philippines, that is 1 Greek and 3 Filipinos), the long distances and the poor condition of roads and transportation makes the support of the Orthodox Communities more difficult.

That's why we try to organise each of these communities under a supporting group which can continue our mission even when a priest can not be present. And that's why in our following list we refer to Orthodox Missions rather than Orthodox Communities.

23) Greek Community
The Greek Community of Metro Manila is very limited. Only a few Greek (or half-Greek) families exist, while many other Greeks are related to the Shipping Companies and do not stay permanently in Philippines (their families are living in Greece). The distance between their residences is also a factor, keeping the Greek Community not organized. Although, many Greeks are periodically supporting the Orthodox Church in the Philippines.
